New!  Jazz Legend Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday was one of the great jazz icons of the 20th century, an innovator who led a turbulent life and died young at the age of 44. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by fellow jazz great Lester Young, many other singers cited Holiday as a primary influence on their own careers, including Frank Sinatra, Anita O'Day, and Shirley Horn. Holiday worked with artists such as Teddy Wilson and Count Basie; appeared in the 1946 movie New Orleans with Louis Armstrong and Woody Herman; and performed sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall towards the end of her career. She was posthumously nominated for 23 Grammy Awards. This course will cover the groundbreaking early years of her career; her celebrated middle period; and her final poignant recordings.
