This ensemble is a collaboration between Winchester Community Music School and Winchester Recreation Department. No musical experience is required.
We’ll learn traditional Caribbean and popular songs while also learning about the music and history of the island of Trinidad, the birthplace of the steel drum (also known as steel pan). Everyone will get to try the different types of steel drums in the ensemble. Players of congas, bongos, and other handheld percussion instruments are also welcome!
The ensemble performs at local community spring and summer events such as Music MAYnia, Winchester Town Day, and Porchfest.
We have enough drums at WinRec for 6 students to use, plus some of our current students have purchased their own drums. Enrollment is limited to 6 participants unless you bring your own drum to class, or wish to play small hand percussion instruments with the ensemble.
Participants have the option of practicing together at WinRec on Monday nights, 6:00-7:00 PM, based on demand and availability.
