We invite the community to enjoy the wide variety of WCMS performances held throughout the year. WCMS faculty and students perform regularly in both formal and informal recitals. Thanks to generous support for community organizations and businesses, these concerts are free and open to the public. Please call the WCMS office if you would like more details on any of these events.

Fat Tuesday Blues Jam at WCMS Nichols Hall

The Fat Tuesday Blues Jam is made up of a growing community of serious hobbyist musicians and one simple concept: musical camaraderie. Our aim is to make jamming fun again by providing you with everything you need to just focus on playing:
--A state-of-the-art, professional performance space
--Gear:  guitar and bass amps, drums, a piano and a professional PA system (just bring your instrument*)
--A house band comprised of patient, supportive and experienced professional musicians
--A regular schedule: jams are held monthly
--A supportive environment w/no attitudes or egos allowed - just great players, cool tunes and a fun hang
For:       All levels of musicians (beginner to advanced)
When:   2nd Tuesday of every month, September-May (plus two summer dates in 2014)
Time:     7 - 9 pm**

Celebrating the Music of the Beatles: The Studio Years From "Penny Lane to Abbey Road" Two shows!

The Beatles recorded some of the finest and most recognizable music of the rock era. To celebrate the legacy of the Beatles’ studio recordings, a diverse group of WCMS faculty and student performers – from rock guitarists to string players – will perform a concert of selected Beatles works under the musical direction of Tad Hitchcock. 

Come relive the era of Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, Got to Get You Into My Life, and more.

Guest Artist Recital: Leo Marillier, violin

A rare opportunity! Please join Winchester Community Music School for a free performance and lecture by virtuoso violinist and rising star Léo Marillier. Léo has won numerous national and international competitions and is now studying in the Master of Music program at New England Conservatory. Born and raised in Provins, France, he has performed as a soloist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Copenhagen Youth Symphony Orchestra, after making orchestra debuts in Germany, Lithuania, and Denmark at age 13. Léo has been described as “one of today’s most exciting young violinists” and “destined to become a major artist of our time.”

His program at WCMS will include Violin Sonata n.3 in D minor op. 108 by Brahms, and movements from  Violin Concerto in D minor op. 47 by Sibelius. He will be accompanied on piano by Sarah SoYoung Yang, a fellow student at NEC. Free admission.

Maurice Cahen Faculty Recital and CD Release Party with special guest, Steve Travis

Maurice Cahen, guitar, is a 1987 graduate of the Berklee College of Music and also studied with Charlie Banacos. He has been performing extensively in the Boston area with diverse ensembles: the “Elysia Chamber Players”, a guitar and flute duo performing chamber music from the Baroque through the twentieth century. Cahen’s original compositions have been published and distributed internationally. He created a trio, a jazz quartet “Reflections” performing in clubs both in the United States and overseas with “The Little Big Band”whose members included: Bob Moses, Danielo Perez and John Medeski. Maurice has commercially available recordings in both classical and Jazz formats. He has a successful private practice as a music teacher and teaches guitar, composition, improvisation, solfege, ear training, harmony and theory at the Winchester Community Music School and at his private teaching studio in Medford, MA.

Steve Travis, Pianist, originally from Washington D.C. moved to New York and studied with Lennie Tristano in Queens and, Carl Berger at the New School for social Research in Manhattan. In 1974 Steve moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend Berklee College of Music and studied with Randy Bell, Jerry Bergonzi and Charlie Banacos. Steve has performed solo throughout the Boston area as well as with various size groups including the Jazz Fusion Band “Spiral”. Steve has been teaching keyboard, harmony and improvisation privately as well as in the private School system.

Join us for our Open Mic Night from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Starbucks, 542 Main Street, Winchester.  Open Mic Nights occur the first Thursday of every month (except January, July and August) and we welcome performers, families and friends for this lively emceed, coffee house event!

Individual or small duo/trio performances are encouraged, but we welcome all ages, all instruments, and all types of music.  Bands are welcome, but must be acoustic.

Broadway On Highland - An Open Performance Event for Singers!

An Open Performance Event for Singers with Host, Norina Rowen

If you love Broadway, come over to WCMS and sing your favorite Broadway hit or join the crowd during our sing-a-long numbers. All ages and ability levels are welcome! Singers from beginners to seasoned professionals are cordially invited to strut their stuff during this fun evening.

Solo, duo, trio, or family act? We're happy to include you. You don't need to be memorized. Just bring your sheet music (no lead sheets please) and a copy for our fabulous accompanist. (Please note that the piano music should be in the same key in which you plan to sing.)

Sign-ups for performers and run-throughs with the accompanist take place from 6:30-7:30 PM on the evening of the event, first come-first served.
